Why get a glass cabinet
70A glass cabinet is a fantastic way of showing of your prized possessions whilst protecting them from harm. You can get glass cabinets in any style you want to match you interior, be it contemporary or traditional. You can get all glass cabinets, laminate cabinets in any colour, real wood cabinets with glass doors or veneered wood.
Why would I want a glass cabinet?
There are number of reasons you may want a glass cabinet, below are a few reasons why I think glass cabinets are a good thing.
- House work
Perhaps at the moment you have a lot of shelves around your living room with valuable ornaments on them and dusting them is a time consuming painful task that needs doing a couple of times a week. Putting your ornaments in a glass cabinet means no dusting of ornaments, yet they are still out on display. The only thing you need to dust and clean is the outer glass and the top of the unit. - Breakages
Putting your ornaments and other possessions in a glass door cabinet is going to decrease the risk of breakages. For starters you’re not going to be picking them up a couple of times a week to dust them and secondly they’re not exposed to the normal dangers of over enthusiastic members of your household! - Hidden treasures
Glass cabinets are a great way of showing hidden treasures that are stored away out of view. What’s the point of owning something if you can’t see or appreciate it? - Security
Perhaps some of the items you own are extremely expensive and you actually keep them hidden away for fear of having them stolen. Well, if you got a cabinet made of toughened glass with high security locks you could have your valuable items on show all of the time. - Space
Having floor standing glass cabinet is an excellent use of space. Suppose you have a small house, but a lot of ornaments. If you had a small glass cabinet – say 2ft x 1ft that was 6 ft high then you would roughly have 8 square feet of storage space! That’s a lot of ornaments. - Visual Appeal and Visual Space
If like I mentioned above you have a small home or small room where you like to keep to your ornament then and all glass cabinet could be the ideal solution. Furniture of a solid construction that goes from floor to ceiling can be very imposing and tends to close is a room making it feel small and claustrophobic. A floor to ceiling glass cabinet though does not give this same feeling. Because you can see through to the walls behind it, it is very unobtrusive and is almost as if your ornaments or valuables are floating.
A glass cabinet can be unobtrusive in the day, but at night time can be a focal point of your room. There are few things around the home that once lit look as stunning as a glass cabinet. There are many cabinets with built in lights, I would recommend either low voltage halogen for the excellent warm crisp white light that it gives out. If you’re lighting shiny objects then you can really notice the difference between low voltage and mains voltage lights.
You can get lights that you can fit to your own glass cabinet, and the same applies you can get low voltage and mains voltage surface mount lights. Do be aware of the heat given out by these forms of light though especially if you are displaying items that may be susceptible to heat, such as wooden or older plastic items.
What if I already have a cabinet.
If you’ve already got a cabinet that doesn’t have doors on it, you could commission someone to make some glass cabinet doors. You may be luck enough to even find some that fit your cabinet. It may require you to think outside of the box though. Go to a few kitchen show rooms and see if they have any doors that would fit. Go to your local glazing company. They will certainly be able to provide you with the glass and if they can’’t provide the accessories such as glass cabinet knobs and hinges then they will certainly be able to point you in the direction of some one that will.
Cleaning a glass cabinet
One of the best and cheapest and environmentally friendly ways to clean glass is with good old fashioned newspaper and vinegar. Forget about all your window sprays and magic cloths. You can use your old newspaper before putting it out for recycling. All you need to do is to mix 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water, and use a piece of crumpled newspaper to buff the glass with the mixture.
